CANADA BEGINS RECORD LOG DRIVE. HULL, QUEBEC, CANADA. Canada's number one manufacturing industry, pulp and paper products, assumes postwar production as Canadian lumberjacks sweep rivers and streams to bring to the mills the logs which all winter they have felled, cut, trimmed and stored along the banks of tributary waterways. Working from four in the morning until nine at night, the logging crews are sweeping in a record drive.Canada's 82 pulp and paper companies, operating 108 mills, employing 200,000 workers earning annual wages of $1,500,000 and with estimated export trade in excess of $180,000,000, have a capital investment of $700,000,000 in this vital industry. CAPTION: A steel-prowed tug clears its way through a "sack" of fresh lumber being run downstream to the mills. 8/7/46 release Aug. 24.
